Replacing a Thirsty Roseville Lawn
Synthetic lawn installation means taking out a living lawn and replacing it with artificial grass that is graded, based, seamed and filled to look like a well-kept yard. Roseville homeowners usually make the switch after a summer of high water bills, sprinklers running four days a week, and brown spots along the sidewalk anyway. A well-built synthetic lawn ends all of that in the converted area.
The part that takes the longest
Removal and base work are most of the labor. We cut out the sod and the top few inches of root-filled soil and haul it away; Angi lists grass removal at about $1 to $2.75 per square foot. Then we shape the subgrade. On south Placer County hardpan, we do not count on water soaking straight down. We slope the subgrade so water travels under the turf to an exit: the curb, a side-yard swale, or a perforated drain line where the yard is landlocked.
Base rock and compaction
The base is crushed rock, usually three to four inches, spread and compacted in layers with a plate compactor and wetted between passes. Angi puts base material at about $1.20 to $2.25 per square foot. A properly compacted base stays flat for years; a loose one shows footprints, dips and ridges within a season.
Picking the right grass
We bring samples with different blade shapes, pile heights and colors. For front lawns, many Roseville owners prefer a medium pile with a tan thatch that reads as real grass from the street. For backyards that see play, a denser product with a stronger thatch recovers better. In sunny spots, lighter and multi-tone colors stay somewhat cooler, though no turf is as cool as irrigated grass.
Trees, beds and sprinklers
Roseville yards often have valley oaks, maples or fruit trees in or beside the lawn. We cap every sprinkler head under the new turf and move edge zones to drip so trees and beds keep their water. We leave a mulched ring around trunks instead of running turf right up to the bark.
Finishing details
Seams are cut along the grain, glued on seaming tape and pinned. Edges are trimmed tight to concrete and fastened every few inches. Infill is spread and brushed in to hold the blades up and weigh the turf down. We finish by power-brushing the whole lawn and walking it with you.
Front yard or backyard first?
Many owners start with the front lawn because it is the most visible and usually the most wasteful to water: narrow strips, overspray onto sidewalks, and full afternoon sun. Others start with the backyard because that is where the dogs and kids are. Either works. Doing both at once saves a second mobilization and haul-off, and we price both ways so you can decide.

Synthetic Lawn Installation Questions
Do you have to dig out my lawn first?
Yes. Leaving sod and roots under the turf leads to settling and soft spots. We remove the lawn and root layer before building the base.
What if my yard holds water in winter?
We slope the subgrade so water moves to an exit, and add a drain line where the yard has no natural outlet. That matters on hardpan lots.
How long does a synthetic lawn last?
HomeGuide puts quality artificial grass at 15 to 25 years with care. Strong sun and heavy use shorten it; a good base and regular brushing help.
Can you install around my existing trees?
Yes. We leave a ring around each trunk and switch the tree to drip so it keeps getting water after the lawn sprinklers are capped.
